BINARY MATHS

TRAILBLAZERS WITH PAM FERGUSSON CHARITABLE TRUST

Note, this is an excerpt from a longer course called Mathematics & The Rainbow. Contact us to find out when we are putting it on again.

WHAT EVEN IS BINARY?

Thanks Khan Academy! This is a great summary! We're going to go over some of it later on, so just watch it from 36s to 1:50

CURRICULUM LINKS

So that is *why* we would study binary, but where does it fit in our curriculum?

The cool thing with this (and a bunch of other DT lessons) is that it fits in so many places in the curriculum!

  • Computational Thinking - Progress Outcome 3
  • Mathematics - Level 3
  • Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes - Progress Outcome 3

LET'S DO THIS

EXERCISE

CONVERTING TO BINARY FROM DECIMAL

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • The Binary Grid
  • The Binary Worksheet.
  • Some counters (if you don't have counters, you can cut some out of some paper, or use paper clips)

NEED MORE?

This was only the first part of a much longer course called Mathematics & The Rainbow. During the course, we break down what a number system is, investigate three different kinds of number systems and learn to convert between them, and then do some simple maths. We then look into how all this data is represented in text, on our screens as pictures and to our ears as sound.
